Happy Halloween

Another quilt that was finished last year during a blogging hiatus.

A Halloween Kaleidoscope Quilt

I saw several quilts in blogland a few years ago that used black and orange prints (like this one and this one and this one) and needed to make my own.  At the time, attempts at a bit of wonkiness frightened me, so I found a great, old-fashioned Kaleidoscope pattern (it's been so long, I don't remember where the pattern came from . . . the blocks finish at 12") and got to work.

Now, part of the success of those other quilts is that they didn't use novelty prints (or very little of them), but used the color to express the Halloween theme.  I, however, had bought Halloween prints on sale and so that's what I used.

The back was pieced together using leftovers from the front.  And can you a bit of the quilting just below the row of black rectangles?  Does it look like a spider web?

Yep, a spider web.  I wish you could see it better.  I started in the center of one of the blocks that was up and to the left a bit.  I used the lines radiating out from the center of that block to create the spokes of my web.  In a spiral, starting from the center, and about 1-1/4" apart, I free-motioned a spider web.

And what's a spider web without spiders?  In the space that was left to the right and across the bottom of the the web, I quilted a broad meander and several large spiders, as though they were dangling from the web.

Quilt Stats:
Fabric: Wide variety of novelty and geometric black and orange prints.
Pattern: Traditional Kaleidoscope that finishes at 12"
Binding: Various black prints.
Finished size: 60" x 72"
Finished date: November, 2011

Happy Halloween.

Wow another masterpiece! What fantastic colors, I love the novelty prints!

So here's a quilt question, I purchased some (cheap) cotton batting and on the package under use and care it says, "can shrink 3-5%. This allows the bat to shrink after quilting and create the desired look of antique puckering." then goes on to explain how to presoak it and shrink it before you quilt, if you don't desire antique puckering?!? So...does all batting do this, and do you presoak/shrink yours??? Or did I just buys some extra cheapy batt?

Amazing quilt :)

I'll answer that one for all to see. I buy the warm and natural batting that is 80% cotton/20% poly and I never preshrink it. I think all cotton battings shrink a little bit, but it's really not much and I don't mind the look it gives. It's just a little wrinkly and really soft.

I LOVE this quilt. Orange and black fabrics without Halloween themes are nice for a sophisticated quilt, but I quilt to make my kiddos happy. Scrappy novelty prints are definitely the way to go. I feel a new stash category coming on. (My husband may have just shuddered in his sleep as I typed that, lol.) Add in the quilting and it's just amazing. I hope to be able to do something like that someday.

I have been meaning to ask you how long you've been quilting. Also how long you've been free motion quilting. I really admire your creativity and confidence!
